Devlog 6 - Original Character Design
I've chosen that the game would be mainly pixel art, except for some of the fighting sections which will be 3d models, but as we're not to 3D stuff yet, here are some pixels.
I choose to make them 8x8 because I like getting a lot of details with little visuals, plus that lets me add a lot of characters rather quickly.
Concept Sketch 1
This is Eek (full name Eeknanaabs Nanomachinesson), she's a goblin with a laser sword as big as she is and a cat onesie. Thinking about the total design of the game, most characters are going to have swords that are 1x4 or 1x5 pixels so I made this one twice as wide to make it clear it's abnormally big.
Concept Sketch 2
For the second concept, I took the hood down, since she's a 3'7" goblin, she's much shorter than most other people and most other characters would be, so making her 7x8 pixels instead of 8x8 alludes to that, plus then the sword can be taller than her to juxtapose the size again.
Concept Sketch 3
The third and final one was more of a return to the first. The cat ears of the onesie are pretty important to her character, and I cut out a pixel in the hood to make it more clear what it is. I changed the sword up to make it more distinct, though she can change the element of her weapon, so it will probably switch between versions in game. I remember talking about value patterning in class, so I made sure to give her tail and hands slightly darker colors so they stood out.
Character Turnaround
Thinking about the art, the character is already in a sort of 3/4 view, as she's clearly facing towards the right, but not quite a side view. I created the 3/4 back view to mirror the front a lot, but the main inconsistency is the tail. From the front view, it goes all the way to the edge of the canvas, whereas on the back it doesn't. This is cause it can look weird depending on how much is showing, if only one pixel was showing on the front, it would be impossible (or more impossible) to tell what it is, but on the back, it looks odd to have three pixels in a horizontal line cause like, gravity exists.
Also here's a gif I made just cause
